Each student will go through the following steps to be placed into an internship. Understand that the information provided in the program application will be shared with companies who make the final decision whether or not to host a particular student. Just as you are "shopping around" for a company, companies are "shopping around" for interns!
- You Receive Acceptance into the Program
- You Pay the Program Deposit (non-refundable)
- Deposit payment is due within 2 weeks of acceptance into the program.
- You Begin the Placement Documentation Process
- Your in-country partner supporting you with the placement sourcing will contact you via email. They may require you to submit documents (e.g., Letter of Interest, Career Development Assessment Form), to revise your resume, and/or to speak with them through an Initial Placement Interview.
- If you have an Initial Placement Interview, it will be conducted online through a video conference meeting after acceptance into the program and payment of program deposit. The interview will be with the in-country partner's placement team.
- Every effort will be made by the in-country partner to provide you the optimal internship experience. In order to help them do this, it will be very important to concisely describe to the placement team the kind of internship experience you are seeking.
- You Make the Final Program Fee Payment
- In-Country Partner carefully crafts your skillsets, knowledge, experience and interests into a student profile.
- In-Country Partner matches your student profile with internship position descriptions from potential host companies.
- The placement team may share your student profile and resume with various companies - sometimes more than 100! - all of whom will evaluate your student profile alongside other competing interns.
- After the Placement Documentation Process and/or Initial Placement Interview, you may be asked to conduct a Company Interview, as well.
- The placement team will be in touch with you to confirm interview details. Not every company requires an interview with the student and that is not out of the ordinary - this depends on the host company and its processes.
- You Make the OIA Fee Payment
- You Receive an Internship Agreement / Offer Letter
- The in-country partner will disclose details regarding your internship placement as soon as possible.
- The placement process and timeline varies student to student and is dependent on the host companies' timeline.
PLACEMENT DISCLOSURE
While we guarantee you a meaningful internship, you must be realistic about the level of internship in which you will be placed. If you have limited or no work experience, no specialization coursework completed, limited leadership experience, or lack other industry-related activities, you will be matched with an entry-level position in your requested discipline, though not necessary within a specific industry.
Please note that the Fisher Global Internships program generally places students with small- to medium-sized companies.
TESTIMONIAL ABOUT THE PLACEMENT PROCESS
Q: "How competitive is the application process for the Fisher Global Internships program?"
A: When reviewing applications for Fisher Global Internships (FGI), we conduct a holistic approach and consider multiple factors, including the student’s GPA, work experience, video response, and knowledge of the local language and culture. Each location has a maximum capacity limit; however, Spring Semester is not the typical term for students to participate in this program, and so it is less competitive than Summer Semester.
Q: "What if I don’t speak the native language of the country I want to go to?"
A: No language other than English is required for any location, but having some skill in the local language will make students more competitive to be selected for that location.
Q: "I’m a Freshman, am I allowed to apply?"
A: No, freshmen are not eligible for this program.
Q: "When will I receive a decision letter?"
A: All students will receive an application decision by the final decision date at the end of October.
Q: "Will airfare be included in the program fee?"
A: For the Fisher Global Internships (FGI) program, airfare will NOT be included. Students accepted into the program will be responsible for their own airfare.
Q: "How does housing work once in-country? Do students have to rent their own apartment, or will Ohio State / Office of Global Business provide housing for them?"
A: The program fee that students pay will include shared housing accommodations, which will be provided by the in-country partner. These housing accommodations are typically near the city center, situated within a 45-90 commute of the host company, with convenient access to grocery stores, laundry facilities, and public/private transportation. The housing provides apartment- or dorm-style units with shared bathrooms, living space, and a kitchenette area.
Q: "Does Ohio State / Office of Global Business help students with transportation once in country?"
A: The program fee covers company placement sourcing, shared housing accommodations, program orientation both pre-departure and in-country, airport pick-up upon arrival to the destination, in-country activities and internship support, and 24/7 onsite health and safety support. It does not cover costs associated with meals or transportation in-country.
Q: "What company will I be working for in my preferred location?"
A: Students who are admitted into the program will not know what company they will be assigned to until after committing to the program and going through the placement process with the in-country partner. Company assignments are based on major, qualifications, and if one has previous work/internship experience.
Q: "Would a Fisher Global Internship be similar to a 9-5 internship in terms of work balance?"
A: The Fisher Global Internship program aims to give students a work experience opportunity matched according to their interests in project work and industry. Therefore, the goal for the internship program is to give students relevant work experience which includes a work balance similar to a 9-5 internship and being expected to work ~40 hours per week. Students should expect to work 5 days per week in a local business environment. Specific companies' work hours may vary due to holidays and cultural norms, and any remote work is expected to be completed in-city.
Q: "As an international student, will I be required to complete CPT paperwork?"
A: In order to maintain your international student status at Ohio State, international students are not eligible for the Fisher Global Internships: Semester program. However, international students are welcome to consider our Virtual Fisher Global Internships program or the Fisher Global Internships: Summer program! Please contact the International Student Services office for any questions about maintaining your international student status at Ohio State.
Q: "Do I self-enroll in BUSADM 4189, the second session Autumn Semester course?"
A: No, the Office of Global Business will automatically enroll after your acceptance into the program.
Q: "I am already scheduled for 18 credit-hours in Autumn Semester. Will I be able to add the 1 credit-hour BUSADM 4189 course to my schedule?"
A: Credit hour appeals are available, however, difficult and rare to receive. Students should plan ahead by having 1 credit-hour available in the Autumn Semester in order to accommodate this course. As the Office of Global Business will enroll accepted students into the BUSADM 4189 course (students cannot enroll themselves), we will contact you if we are unable to enroll you due to your already being at or beyond 17.5 credit-hours. In that case, it is your responsibility to submit a credit hour appeal with your academic advisor, and you may do this as soon as you are accepted into the program. The additional credit hour may impact tuition costs, and students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor and review the Student Tuition and Fee Tables on the Registrar website to determine the actual impact on tuition.
Remember: Credit hour appeals are not guaranteed.
Q: "Do I need to register for a class while interning abroad to maintain my student status?"
A: U.S. students can either register for the BA 4189 course, or request a Leave of Absence with their academic advisor. BA 4191 is optional and students are not required to enroll. This is a 0-credit hour class which acts as a placeholder if students need “full-time registered” status during spring semester. Reasons one might take the BA 4191 is to be eligible for athletic tickets or to help with financial aid. The class does have fees, and students can learn more about this course.
Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee in installments?"
A: No, your deposit is due two weeks from your acceptance letter. However, your final program fee is due by the date listed in your acceptance letter or by the final payment due date listed on the website (whichever one is later). The final payment due date is listed on the website when applications open in August. This is so students who are serious about committing to the program can begin preparing for finances early on. If you are accepted and committed to the program early, the payment portal will allow you to make payments in installments. However, you must complete your final installment by the final payment due date listed on the website.
Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee with money from a 529 account?"
A: Yes, payment with a 529 account is accepted and must be done via check through the following steps:
